Cooperative profile

Biofan aims at promoting Monte Amiata chestnuts (GPI). The cooperative developed a project to produce and sell foods and drinks made from Monte Amiata chestnuts. Technology and productive processes have been studied in partnership with the National Council of Research, the University of Florence and the Association of Monte Amiata Chestnut GPI.

They intend to start producing two kinds of goods using chestnut flour:

  • a high protein chestnut bar with low fat content and no added sugar;
  • a chestnut drink, no added sugar.

Target market

The cooperative’s target market is a niche one – people interested in quality products and healthy food produced on a small scale. The final consumer is someone who “reads product labels”, able to identify a balanced food intake to guarantee a healthy lifestyle and good and suited for any age, from children to the elderly, from sports people to workers.  End-consumers will be reached only via the web while most of the supply will be directed to sellers in Central and Northern Italy, such as organic and health food shops and specialized sections in supermarkets.

Founders

The cooperative is made up of four members: two agro technicians and two agricultural workers, all skilled in chestnut farming.
