Tweetable description

A service to bury cremation ashes under memorial trees and to safeguard the woodlands

Cooperative profile

Boschi Vivi proposes an alternative burial service for cremation ashes. Ashes, in a biodegradable urn, are buried under a tree in a woodland owned by private individuals or councils but run by the cooperative. Clients pay the licenses for the burial ground for a defined period. Revenues arising from these fees are used for memorial tree maintenance and for woodland regeneration projects, not only in areas where the cooperative carries out the burial service.

Target market

The cooperative’s target market is Northern Central Italy where there are many wooded areas and where the cremation rate is higher than in other parts of Italy. Fifty years ago, only a tiny fraction of Italians chose to be cremated. Cremation has become much more popular in recent decades. The cremation rate in North-Central Italy was about 25% in 2011 that represents a 200% increase from 2001. In the next years, the cremation rate is forecasted to reach the European average (about 37%). This projected increase is seen as an expanding sector for the cooperative’s share of the market.

Founders

The cooperative is made up of four members: three architects specialized in landscape architecture and design and one lawyer specialized in technology transfer.
